Dennis D. O’Doherty

Dennis D. O’Doherty is a former government and corporate finance marketing executive for leading international banks. Born in Limerick, Ireland, Mr. O’Doherty was raised and educated in New York. He received his higher education at Sampson College, and attended the American Institute of Banking.

Mr. O’Doherty served as a Senior Public Finance Officer at Marine Midland Bank, where he worked with several New York State municipalities, advising them on bond, tax and revenue anticipation notes.

In 1972, Mr. O’Doherty was elected to the New York State Legislature, representing Suffolk County’s Fifth Assembly District. While in the State Legislature, he was a member of the Agriculture, Health Care and Local Government committees.

In 1968, Mr. O’Doherty, along with his wife Joanne and others, bought The Suffolk County News, a 100-year-old weekly newspaper with a circulation of over 10,000. He set up a newspaper archival department and, along with the Sayville Public Library, developed a microfilm section for the newspaper that would provide easy access to old copies for use in reference and research purposes. These records are still presently available on microfilm at the Sayville Public Library.

A WWII veteran, Mr. O’Doherty served in the U.S. Army under General George S. Patton’s command and received five Bronze Battle Stars for participating in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland.

Mr. O’Doherty has been a member of Dowling College’s Board of Trustees since June 1980. In 2011 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Dowling College. In addition to his service on Dowling’s board, Mr. O’Doherty served as trustee of Long Island Health and Hospital Planning, The Boy Scouts of America, President of the East End Republican Club, and Director of the South Shore Boys Club. He is a member of the Islip Town Planning Board, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. O’Doherty resides in Sayville, Long Island, and is the father two children and one grandchild.
