Reception and Lecture by the artist, Samira Abbassy
September 30, 2007 1:00 - 4:00, Lecture 2:00 p.m.

In conjunction with Dowling College’s annual theme, Globalism: One World, The Anthony Giordano Gallery at Dowling College will feature the paintings and drawings of Samira Abbassy. Ms. Abbassy is an artist with an international reputation. She is a grant recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts and her work is part of the permanent collection of the British government and the Royal Academy in London, England.

Born in Iran and raised in the United Kingdom, where she studied painting at Birmingham Polytechnic and the Canterbury College of Art, Ms. Abbassy has lived and worked in New York since the mid-1990's. Reflecting the diversity of these experiences, her paintings and drawings present aspects of her own cultural background and assimilate the imagery of other artistic traditions. Her varied sources include Islamic iconography, Indian manuscripts, Old Testament narratives, and popular music, all of which converge in compositions that mediate on our spiritual and physical experiences in the contemporary world.
