Light, More Light: A Photo Installation by Bryan Whitney

September 1 - December 1, 2008

The Anthony Giordano Gallery is pleased to announce an installation of photographs by Bryan Whitney featured on the west windows of the Marjorie Fortunoff Mayrock Conservatory. Mr. Whitney prepared this installation in conjunction with an exhibition of his photographs entitled Infrastructures at The Anthony Giordano Gallery.

Each of these windows depicts a kind of plant that Mr. Whitney photographed under X-rays to make it at once both naturalistic and abstract. Their organic subjects recall the room's original function as a greenhouse, but the ghostly images also evoke the stained glass windows of medieval cathedrals and their associations with divine illumination. Along these lines, the text that runs along the top of the windows is a variation of the dying words of the German poet and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who called for "Licht! Mehr Licht!" moments before passing away. These windows operate in this tradition by giving natural light and organic forms a spiritual significance and transcendental presence.

He dedicates this piece to the memory of his mother.
