WHAT WILL IT COST?
Tuition and fees –
If you plan to go to one of the Universities where Dowling College has an "Exchange Agreement" you will usually pay your full-time Dowling College tuition and fees -- about $13,562 per semester. Then when you get to your International University they will give you a scholarship for your tuition and fees, but you will be responsible for other costs.
If you select a Study Abroad provider organization to sponsor your program, you will pay Dowling the cost of the actual tuition and fees charged by the provider. Since Study Abroad provider organizations usually include many "built-in" services -- such as housing (and sometimes meals), transportation to/from the airport, local travel to interesting cultural locations -- and a local agent in the host country to help you with any issues that might arise, their cost is often higher than Dowling College tuition and fees. A total fee of between $13,000 and $19,000 per semester is not unusual, depending upon the expense of the overseas study location -- a program in Paris is more expensive than a program in Botswana -- and the amount of support the Provider organization gives in its service.
You will need to include Dowling College's Study Abroad Fee of $1,200, which also pays for the analysis and recording of transfer credits received from your Study Abroad University.
Other costs that may apply include:
Transportation to/from your Study Abroad location
Visa and related costs
Health Insurance
Housing
Books
Local transportation and Expenses
Food
Personal expenses
CAN MY FINANCIAL AID HELP WITH THE COST?
It might. You should meet with your financial aid advisor and apply if: (1) you apply to a program and the courses are pre-approved to apply to your program; (2) the University abroad is approved by the Dowling College Study Abroad office; (3) the college receives official notice of your registration into that/those courses before or within a very short time of your going abroad; and (4) after the courses you provide Dowling College with an official transcript in a sealed envelope from the university abroad.
ARE THERE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WHICH I CAN APPLY?
There are many organizations which offer scholarships for specific programs and for students with specific qualifications. Here are a few websites to visit for further information:
Many of these sites also have lots of information to help choose a program, to select a destination, and to help prepare you to go abroad. There is a LARGE amount of useful information out there. Your Study Abroad office can help you to dig through it and decide which program is best for you.
