The Social Emotional and Literacy Professional Learning Communities That Reach Beyond the 3Rs

How Social and Emotional Literacy Creates an Environment that Promotes Academic Excellence.

This course will allow teachers and administrators the opportunity for independent inquiry, learning in cooperation with others, and reflective practice. By participating in the course, teachers and administrators will enhance professional dialogue and effectively blend different, innovative, and practical strategies for implementation in their school setting. Participants will design a year-long SEL implementation plan that will create a Professional Learning Community in which they will learn, grow, and achieve together. The impact of these efforts will allow students to become socially and emotionally literate while succeeding academically.

The course will be designed as a participatory course by creating ongoing think, pair, share activities, and collegial work groups. Each participant will be required to maintain a reflective journal that will be utilized throughout the course. In addition, they will create Professional Portfolio of SEL activities for the entire school year. The activities will lend themselves to involving all constituencies in their school district.
