Writing Your Cover Letter

Components of a Cover Letter:
  1. Introduction Paragraph
    • Announce the position for which you are applying
    • Indicate how you learned about the position
    • If possible, show that you are familiar with this particular company and its products or services.
    • Indicate how you can fit in, or be of value as an employee.

  2. Content Paragraph(s)
    • Describe yourself and your strengths in relation to the position.
    • Relate your assets to the position without repeating the information you have outlined in your resume.
    • Use words and phrases that describe you as an individual, e.g., highly motivated, experienced, mature, enthusiastic, etc.
    • Use words that indicate you are knowledgeable about the techniques, responsibilities and procedures required by the position.

  3. Closing Paragraph
    • Refer to your enclosed resume.
    • Set the stage for an interview and further contact.
