Dowling Community and Veterans Gather for SVAA House Dedication

In an effort to provide our student veterans and community of veterans better facilities and outreach services, Dowling College dedicated a house, located on the Oakdale Campus, to its chapter of the Student Veterans of America Association (SVAA) on February 24, 2015. The event was attended by over 150 people, made up of representatives from all military branches, including the Army and Air National guard, the VFW, the American Legion and both local and county government services representatives.

In addition, the lounge area of the house was dedicated in the memory of Captain Manuel Rivera, Jr. a 1982 graduate of Dowling College, who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our Nation when his plane crashed during combat operation supporting Operation Desert Shield on January 22, 1991. The family of Captain Rivera attended the event and there are future plans to start a scholarship that will be given in his name to a member of the armed service that attends Dowling College.

Both Fios1 and Newsday covered the event through video footage.
